& Global Finalist Mandy's Experience

"There's nothing to lose. Even if I hadn't won, I had already gained so much from the competition, and from the people that I met there. Be bold and do it." - Mandy Chan,
GSEA Global Finalist 2019

GSEA Global Finalist Mandy Chan took a gap year after junior college to work on building BOW, a lifestyle startup that designs multi-functional backpacks. Her friend Jackson Kwa, who was a GSEA Global finalist in 2016, encouraged her to apply for the competition.

Through the competition, she met like-minded student entrepreneurs at different stages of their businesses.

She said,"Never have I ever met a group of people who were so motivated to do their own thing and, it was a sense of community - that we were all in this together, balancing business and studies. It was a very good experience - to expand my circle of friends to include people who were doing the same thing as me."

The competition also gave her access to established members of the Entrepreneurs' Organization (EO) who provided mentorship and feedback to the participants. "When the EO members shared from their own experience, instead of giving actual advice, it really helped me to gain perspective. With the constant encouragement from them, I didn't feel so alone. A large part of entrepreneurship is that you feel that you have to do everything yourself, but with them sharing their experiences, you feel like, someone else has been through it and survived, so you can too," she said.
